The primary distinction has to do with the material's gauge, or thickness. Any material that is thinner than 0.187" is classified as steel sheet, and any material that is thicker than 0.187" is classified as steel plate. Simply said, structural steel, also known as steel plate, is steel sheet material that can be cut and welded as usual to create more complex products. It is created by compressing several steel layers into one, resulting in a steel plate.
